Amazon, Zalando, Netflix: How to estimate the real value of a gift card

Selling a gift card online that you’ll never use is one of the few transactions where the buyer risks more than the seller. If the code has been used just once, the card is worthless. This is why the method you use to transfer it to the new owner matters more than the discount you offer.

The resale value of a gift card depends on three factors: the brand, the expiration date, and the denomination. Cards redeemable at popular stores sell with minimal discounts. Those from niche chains can drop by as much as twenty percent below face value, simply because the pool of potential buyers is smaller.

Selling a gift card online cleanly primarily means having recent proof of the balance. Major retailers, from Amazon to Zalando, offer the option to check the remaining balance from your account: a screenshot with a visible date is much more effective than a thousand reassurances. Anyone who agrees to pay without requesting this proof is usually either desperate or a risk-taker.

Selling event tickets online also means dealing with an unpredictable schedule. A postponement, a rescheduling to lunchtime, a match behind closed doors: these are all things that can happen and, if you don't have a clear contract with the buyer, they can put you in an ambiguous position. Those who work with reputable platforms already have these eventualities written into their rules.

A common mistake is to show the PIN code during negotiations, perhaps "just to show it's real." Once exposed, you no longer have control over it: anyone who saw that screen could have copied it. If you absolutely must show the card, display the graphic part and the non-redeemable number, never the full code.

Gift cards used as corporate welfare in Italy have specific regulations. Some are transferable, others are not; some are linked to the employee's tax code. Before selling them, it's always advisable to read the welfare plan regulations, or you risk reselling something that couldn't truly be transferred.

Of course, something unexpected might still happen occasionally. It’s part of the game. But when it does, if you’ve done your groundwork well, the issue will be resolved with a few emails rather than a lawsuit. That’s already a huge victory, even if it doesn’t seem like it.
