Sell gift cards online: which brands really sell

Gift cards are the most common gift in the world, and at the same time the most practical. The problem is that millions circulate at Christmas, and a good portion end up in forgotten drawers until they expire. Reselling them makes sense, but the market is full of already scanned codes, tampered balances, and doctored screenshots.

Used gift cards as corporate welfare in Italy have specific rules. Some are transferable, others are not; some are tied to the original employee's tax code. Before selling them, it's always a good idea to read the welfare plan's regulations, or you risk reselling something that couldn't truly be transferred.

A common mistake is to show the PIN code during negotiations, perhaps 'just to show that it's real.' Once exposed, you no longer have control over it: anyone who saw that screen might have copied it. If you absolutely must show the card, show the graphic part and the non-redeemable number, never the complete code.

Reviews are useful but should be read like a novel: pay attention to the rhythm, language, and dates. A profile with fifty five-star reviews all written in the same month makes much less of an impression than one with twenty reviews, two of which are a bit off, but spread over a couple of years.

The resale value of a gift card depends on three factors: the brand, the expiration date, and the denomination. Cards redeemable at popular stores sell with minimal discounts. Those for niche chains can drop by as much as twenty percent below face value, simply because the pool of buyers is smaller.

Selling a gift card cleanly online primarily means having recent proof of the balance. Large chains, from Amazon to Zalando, offer the ability to check the remaining credit from your account: a screenshot with a visible date is much more effective than a thousand reassurances. Anyone who agrees to pay without asking for this proof is usually either desperate or a professional risk-taker.

Then, of course, something unexpected will still happen sometimes. That's part of the game. But when it does, if you've done your groundwork well, the problem will be resolved with a few emails and not a complaint. That's already a huge victory, even if it doesn't seem like it.
