PIN codes hidden in gift cards: how to protect them during negotiations

Selling a gift card online that you’ll never use is one of the few transactions where the buyer risks more than the seller. All it takes is for the code to have been used once and the card is worthless. This is why the method you use to transfer it to the new owner matters more than the discount you offer.

A common mistake is to show the PIN code during negotiations, perhaps "just to prove it's real." Once exposed, you no longer have control over it: anyone who saw that screen could have copied it. If you absolutely must show the card, show the graphical part and the non-redeemable number, never the full code.

Selling a gift card online cleanly primarily means having recent proof of the balance. Large chains, from Amazon to Zalando, offer the possibility to check the remaining credit from your account: a screenshot with a visible date is much more effective than a thousand reassurances. Anyone who agrees to pay without asking for this proof is usually either desperate or a professional risk-taker.

The nominative nature of many digital titles - tickets, subscriptions, corporate gift cards - is designed to protect the original buyer, but ends up complicating life for those who want to legitimately transfer the title. Platforms that work well in this area have built integrations with official name change systems, or have protected chats where the transfer occurs in the presence of a neutral arbiter.

Gift cards used as corporate welfare in Italy have specific rules. Some are transferable, others are not; some are linked to the original employee's tax code. Before selling them, it's always advisable to read the welfare plan regulations, or you risk reselling something that couldn't truly be transferred.

The resale value of a gift card depends on three factors: the brand, the expiration date, and the denomination size. Cards usable in popular stores sell with minimal discounts. Those from niche chains can drop twenty percent below face value, simply because the pool of buyers is smaller.

Unfortunately, there are no serious shortcuts. The only things that truly work, after years of stories collected, are calmness in evaluating the counterparty, a payment method with real protection, and a written record of everything that was discussed.
