The Number One Risk of Used Gift Cards (and How to Avoid It)

Gift cards are both the most commonplace and most practical gift in the world. The problem is that millions circulate at Christmas, and a good portion end up in forgotten drawers until they expire. Reselling them makes sense, but the market is full of already scanned codes, doctored balances, and altered screenshots.

The resale value of a gift card depends on three factors: the brand, the expiration date, and the denomination. Cards redeemable at widely popular stores sell with minimal discounts. Those from niche chains can drop as much as twenty percent below face value, simply because the buyer pool is smaller.

In Italy, gift cards used as corporate welfare have specific rules. Some are transferable, others are not; some are linked to the original employee's tax code. Before selling them, it's always a good idea to read the welfare plan regulations, or you risk reselling something that couldn't truly be transferred.

It must be said that there are situations where protected payment isn't the best compromise. For a ten-euro purchase between long-time friends, it doesn't make sense; it would be like calling a notary for a shared lunch. But above a certain threshold, and whenever a stranger is involved, the small friction of protected payment costs a thousand times less than an unpleasant surprise.

Selling a gift card cleanly online primarily means having recent proof of the balance. Large chains, from Amazon to Zalando, offer the ability to check the remaining credit from your account: a screenshot with a visible date is much more effective than a thousand reassurances. Anyone who agrees to pay without asking for this proof is usually either desperate or a risk professional.

A common mistake is to show the PIN code during negotiations, perhaps 'just to show it's real.' Once exposed, you no longer have control over it: anyone who saw that screen could have copied it. If you absolutely must show the card, show the graphical part and the non-redeemable number, never the complete code.

Unfortunately, there are no serious shortcuts. The only things that truly work, after years of collected stories, are calmness in evaluating the counterparty, a payment method with real protection, and a written record of everything that was said.
