Phishing and Online Payments: How to Be Prepared

Online scams in Italy grow by double-digit percentages every year, and the curious thing is that the scripts are almost always the same. Names change, social media accounts change, but the script is repetitive. Recognizing the pattern is the cheapest and most effective way to never fall for them.

A trivial but powerful habit is to keep the minimum amount of funds possible on the card you use for online purchases. Use a dedicated pre-paid card, load it with the amount you need, and that's it. Even if someone were to steal your data, the maximum damage is limited from the start. Minor inconvenience, major peace of mind.

If you've been scammed online, report it. Always. Even for small amounts, even if you're convinced that "it's no use anyway." Reports are the only way postal police can reconstruct patterns and shut down linked accounts. Each report, aggregated, protects the person after you.

A well-written ad is worth ten excellent but poorly written tickets. Always include: sector, row, number of seats, if they are adjacent, event date and time, entry conditions, if the name can already be changed or needs to be changed. Add a photo of the ticket with sensitive data obscured. In two minutes, you give the reader everything they need to trust you.

If you receive a strange message from a fake courier, a fake bank, or a fake operator from one of the sites you use, there's only one rule: don't click. Close the message, open the official app or website manually, and look for the information there. Most scams die on their own when the victim ignores the link and authenticates through the official channel.

Two-factor authentication should be active on everything that involves money or identity: bank, primary email, preferred marketplace account. Even better, a passkey, the latest and most phishing-resistant system. It's five minutes of one-time setup, and it eliminates half the risks.

There are no serious shortcuts, unfortunately. The only things that truly work, after years of collecting stories, are calmly evaluating the counterparty, a payment method with real protection, and a written record of everything that's been said.
