Online Scams: The Six Most Common in Italy in 2026

Cybersecurity for individuals isn't about antivirus; it's about habits. Ninety percent of reported frauds don't stem from technical flaws but from people being tricked by a phone call, SMS, or a well-crafted message into doing the wrong thing.

Two-factor authentication should be active on anything that handles money or identity: your bank, primary email, and preferred marketplace accounts. Even better is a passkey, the latest system and most resistant to phishing attacks. It's a five-minute setup, just once, and it eliminates half of your risks.

If you receive a strange message from a fake courier, a fake bank, or a fake operator from one of the websites you use, there's only one rule: don't click. Close the message, open the official app or website manually, and find the information there. Most scams die out when the victim ignores the link and authenticates through the official channel.

If you're selling concert tickets online, the first question you need to answer is: is my ticket nominative? The vast majority of shows in Italy today are, and transferring them requires an official process through the ticketing website. Ignoring this step means selling a ticket that might not work at the gate, and the buyer will rightfully come back to you.

If you've been scammed online, report it. Always. Even for small amounts, even if you're convinced it "won't help anyway." Reports are the only way the postal police can reconstruct patterns and close linked accounts. Each report, in aggregate, protects the person after you.

A simple but powerful habit is to keep the minimum possible funds on the card you use for online purchases. Use a dedicated prepaid card, top it up only for the amount you need. Even if someone manages to steal your data, the maximum damage is already limited from the start. A little friction, a lot of peace of mind.

Then, of course, something unexpected will still happen sometimes. That's part of the game. But when it does, if you've done your groundwork well, the problem will be resolved with a few emails rather than a police report. That's already a huge victory, even if it doesn't seem like it.
