Sell gift cards online: the expiration date issue

Selling a gift card online that you’ll never use is one of the few transactions where the buyer risks more than the seller. All it takes is for the code to have been used once, and the card is worthless. That’s why the method you use to transfer it to the new owner matters more than the discount you offer.

The resale value of a gift card depends on three factors: the brand, the expiration date, and the denomination. Cards redeemable at popular stores sell with minimal discounts. Those for niche chains can drop by twenty percent below face value, simply because the pool of buyers is smaller.

A common mistake is to show the PIN code during negotiations, perhaps "just to show it's real." Once exposed, you no longer have control over it: anyone who saw that screen could have copied it. If you absolutely must show the card, show the graphic part and the non-redeemable number, never the full code.

In the digital securities market, time is the most underestimated variable. A concert ticket loses value rapidly as the event approaches; a gift card expiring in six months is worth less than a fresh, newly issued one. Thinking like a commodities trader helps set realistic prices, avoiding both underselling and being stuck with the security.

Gift cards used as corporate welfare in Italy have specific regulations. Some are transferable, others are not; some are linked to the original employee's tax code. Before selling them, it's always advisable to read the welfare plan regulations, or you risk reselling something that couldn't truly be transferred.

Selling a gift card online properly means, first and foremost, having recent proof of the balance. Major chains, from Amazon to Zalando, offer the ability to check the remaining credit from your account: a screenshot with a visible date is much more effective than a thousand assurances. Anyone who agrees to pay without asking for this proof is usually either desperate or a risk professional.

Of course, something unexpected will still happen now and then. It’s part of the game. But when it does, if you’ve done your groundwork well, the problem will be resolved with a few emails rather than a lawsuit. That’s already a huge victory, even if it doesn’t seem like it.
