Sell gift cards online: why you need proof of balance

Gift cards are the most common gift in the world, and also the most practical. The problem is that millions circulate at Christmas, and a good portion end up in forgotten drawers until they expire. Selling them is a sensible idea, but the market is full of already scanned codes, doctored balances, and altered screenshots.

To sell a gift card online legitimately, you first need recent proof of the balance. Major retailers, from Amazon to Zalando, offer the option to check the remaining credit from your account: a screenshot with a visible date is much more effective than a thousand reassurances. Anyone who agrees to pay without asking for this proof is usually either desperate or a risk professional.

The resale value of a gift card depends on three factors: the brand, the expiration date, and the denomination. Cards usable at popular stores sell with minimal discounts. Those from niche chains can drop by as much as twenty percent below face value, simply because the pool of buyers is smaller.

New European regulations, progressively implemented in recent years, have significantly raised the bar. Today, any online payment above a certain threshold must go through strong customer authentication, meaning at least two different factors. The practical consequence is that the classic "copy-paste" card theft works much less often than before, and fraudsters have shifted towards social engineering.

A common mistake is to show the PIN code during negotiations, perhaps "just to prove it's real." Once exposed, you no longer have control over it: anyone who saw that screen could have copied it. If you absolutely must show the card, show the graphic part and the non-redeemable number, never the full code.

Gift cards used as corporate welfare in Italy have specific rules. Some are transferable, others are not; some are linked to the original employee's tax code. Before selling them, it's always advisable to read the welfare plan regulations, or you risk reselling something that could not actually be transferred.
