Digital financial education: what to teach your children about online payments

Online scams in Italy grow by double-digit percentages every year, and the curious thing is that the scripts are almost always the same. Names change, social accounts used change, but the script is repetitive. Recognizing the pattern is the cheapest and most effective way to never fall for them.

If you receive a strange message from a fake courier, a fake bank, or a fake operator from one of the sites you use, there is only one rule: do not click. Close the message, open the official app or website manually, and look for the information there. Most scams die on their own when the victim ignores the link and authenticates through the official channel.

Two-factor authentication should be active on everything that touches money or identity: your bank, main email, and preferred marketplace account. Even better is a passkey, the most recent system and most resistant to phishing attacks. It's five minutes of configuration just once, and it removes half of the risks.

The checklist I use is simple, but I go over it every time. One: does the seller have a profile with history, with dated reviews, not all from this month? Two: are the item photos unique, or have I just seen identical ones on another ad? Three: is the price consistent with the market, or is it so low as to be suspicious? Four: what payment method do they offer? If even one answer is shaky, I stop.

If you have been scammed online, report it. Always. Even for small amounts, even if you are convinced that "it's useless anyway." Reports are the only way the postal police can reconstruct patterns and close connected accounts. Each report, in aggregate, protects the person after you.

A trivial but powerful habit is to keep the minimum possible funds on the card you use for online purchases. Use a dedicated prepaid card, top it up for the amount you need and that's it. Even if someone manages to steal your data, the maximum damage is already limited from the start. Small friction, great peace of mind.

Then, of course, something unexpected will happen sometimes. It's part of the game. But when it does, if you've done your homework beforehand, the problem will be resolved with a few emails and not with a police report. It's already a huge victory, even if it doesn't seem like it.
